Keynote 2015 – Bryan Alexander

Waves of the Future: Possibilities for Higher Education

ABSTRACT: It is notoriously difficult to predict the future, but there are ways by which we can better prepare ourselves for emerging possibilities in the education realm.  First, we examine current trendlines in order to explore which may yield significant outcomes in the medium- and long-term future.  These trends are drawn from technology, policy, educational technology, economic, and demographic fields.  Second, we work through a set of scenarios, each representing a different possible future determined by key drivers.  These include futures where open information architecture has triumphed, along with one where it has failed; a future shaped by massive automation of many functions previously performed by human beings; a future where we celebrate a Renaissance worth of digitally-enabled creativity.
